A new year, a new project! Project 52 - Wide Open

Happy New Year!

I know it has been a while since my last post, but I can explain! Really! See, Christmas came and went, then we traveled to Arizona to photograph the most amazing family who we LOVE to pieces, and then I came back sick. Today is literally the first day I have been able to sit here at my computer. I had all sorts of grand plans with the blog. Pictures I was going to share, awesome blog posts about finishing up an amazing year, and goals for 2012. I am still going to do those posts, but they will be a bit delayed due to the huge mack truck that ran into me. It's true, I have the New Years Cold!

Anyways, I am sure you have seen all sorts of different projects that revolve around taking images every day and sharing them with the universe, like Project 365. While that project sounds like so much fun, I am really not sure I have it in me to be so diligent to share a daily image you. Thankfully, it is a project you can start at any time of the year, so maybe on June 1st, I'll see how I feel.

Instead of doing Project 365, I've decided to do Project 52. I'll be sharing images weekly that I have taken. These images aren't necessarily going to be client images, as they will be random images from my daily life. To add a little twist to the project, ALL of the images I will be posting are going to be taken with my 50mm 1.2 or my 85mm 1.2 at the aperture of f/1.2. I've decided to call this project Wide Open! Taking images with a wide aperture of f/1.2 isn't easy, and you really have to work at it. It took me about 6 months to get a grasp on this whole wide open concept a few years, but now I have a handle on it. Not every single image will be in focus, but it's worth it in the end!

Here we are at week 1/52
We had a little challenge at church for our photography ministry team, and that was to share a depth of field image.
Wish being so sick the past few days, I have eaten a LOT of these "cuties" from our backyard tree.
And, I am on a new kick this year, and that is to try to have a green smoothie at least once a day. I still need to navigate some recipes. I'll blog more about those yummy drinks later.

My favorite subjects to photograph wide open are toddlers and seniors. These aren't necessarily recent images, but I wanted to give some examples.

Like I said, it is a lot of work. The image above of Kara was taken with my 50 1.2 at f/1.2 and the image below of Rhys was taken with my 85 1.2 at f/1.2.
I'll be blogging more about this whole wide open project again next week, and really going into detail about aperture, depth of field, etc.

Are you doing a Project 365 or Project 52? Let me know below in the comment box!

Here's to 52 weeks of wide open images!
